... On the morning of August 3, 1818, Joseph Swift, a cashier at the Cumberland Bank in Portland, discovered that over $200,000 had been stolen from the vault. While two suspects later confessed to the crime, the money was never recovered. Some say that clammers discovered the money buried in Scarborough Marsh. Others say the money is still there. Why, The Friends of the Scarborough Marsh of course! Why else would anyone befriend a marsh?! For the long lost loot, naturally!
