Scarborough is located on the coast of Maine six miles south of Portland.  As a pleasant commuter town with its own vibrant business community and shopping areas, we cater equally well to the needs of summer visitors.

Whether for a weekend getaway or summer vacation, we offer a choice of romantic inns, motels, campgrounds and a variety of restaurants.

Besides many fine places to walk and explore, recreational amenities include golf, tennis, bowling, kayaking, short track speedway and indoor carting.

Among Scarborough's most beautiful features is the scenic 3,100-acre Scarborough Marsh.  The salt marsh is crossed by meandering tidal rivers and streams and is a habitat for a broad array of wildlife and birds.  The marsh estuary opens to a coastline flanked by miles of sandy beaches from Pine Point to the South, Ferry Beach, Prouts Neck, Scarborough Beach and the quiet coastal community of Higgins Beach to the North.

With a population of 17,000, Scarborough is Maine's second fastest growing community.

Scarborough Career Development Council

A joint initiative between the

Scarborough Community Chamber

and

Scarborough High School

Career Exploration Opportunities

Working together, the Staff of the Scarborough High School Guidance Department and the Scarborough Chamber of Commerce are organizing a variety of opportunities for students to become aware of the many careers represented by the businesses of Scarborough.

Some students may just need to hear a presentation to confirm their career plans. Others may want to visit a variety of work sites to explore the many environments. Others may want to do extensive, in-depth exploration through an internship or work-study.

Be a resource to your community by participating in Scarborough High School’s Career Development Programs

With every one working together, we can provide opportunities for Scarborough High School students to explore work environments, career clusters, educational opportunities, and employment options.

Please review the proposed ways for business people to engage with our students.  The students will be available to participate individually, as members of small groups, and as members of a specific class designed to make intensive career exploration an option as students advance through the high school experience.

Levels of Involvement

How can you and your colleagues participate in the CAREER EDUCATION PROGRAM sponsored by the Scarborough Career Development Council?

1.  Classroom Speaker

One or more members of your business will be available to make a classroom presentation at the school.

2.  Job Site Visitation Program

One or more areas of your business can be made available for individual or groups of students to visit and observe the work environment and process at your work site.

3.  Job Shadow/ Exploration

One or more members of your business will be available to meet with a student or group of students to explore the education, training, and preparation required to be successful in obtaining the skills, attitudes, and aptitudes required to be successful in your business.  Would probably involve more than one but less then 5 sessions.

4.  Career Investigation Mentor

One or more members of your business will be available to meet with a student who is developing a comprehensive investigation into a specific career in your business environment.  The student will be developing an in-depth analysis of the career and multiple applications for those skills and aptitudes in the business world. One to three sessions.

5.  Internship Sponsor

One or more members of your business will be available to supervise a student in an internship where the student will function as an employee while exploring multiple facets of your industry.  Would involve 10 to 15 sessions.

6.  Work-study

One student would be hired by your company for a minimum of 60 hours where the student would be compensated for the work performed but which would also provide the student with real work and career exploration in the company setting.

Chamber Members Discuss Their Careers With Scarborough High School Career Development Class.

Since September 2004, SHS Career Development Class students have been learning about career opportunities in Scarborough from many Chamber members.  Guidance Counselor Sandy Smith, who teaches the class, has done a great job inviting presenters whose careers match the particular interests and aspirations of the students.  The classroom presenters have enjoyed interacting with our colleagues of tomorrow.  Some sample comments:

Ø      Setting-up the presentations with Sandy Smith’s support is a smooth process.

Ø      Students asked good questions.

Ø      The group looked interested and “represented the town very well.”

Ø      Thank you notes written by each student are a huge hit.

Ø      All presenters said they enjoyed talking with the class and would be happy to do so again.

Chamber members who are interested in either being classroom presenters or having the student group visit their site to tour, but have not yet “signed up” to participate, are invited to contact Sandy Smith at sasmith@scarborough.k12.us.me.

Career Development Council Begins Its Fourth Year

The Career Development Council, a partnership between the Scarborough Community Chamber and the Scarborough High School Guidance Department, entered its fourth year this fall as both a high school curriculum and annual Chamber event. Established in 2004, the council provides an on-going classroom elective whereby local business owners interact with students who are seeking more information about potential careers. It also provides an annual Career Expo where local businesses and professionals volunteer their time as panelists to discuss career opportunities with the entire sophomore class.

The objective of the Career Development class is to expose and educate students to a variety of career choices that will help them plan for college or further technical education beyond high school. The business participants volunteer their time to present and discuss the various aspects of their businesses, while the students are assigned the task of obtaining specific information from the presenter through targeted questions. Whether it is the educational requirements of a medical technician, how many hours of training a firefighter must have, or explaining a typical day in the life of an attorney the Career Development class presents an amazing spectrum of careers and what it takes to prepare for and be successful in those careers. In addition to being a participant speaker in the classroom, businesses can also volunteer to offer job site visits, job shadowing, internships, work-study, or become a career investigation mentor.

Each spring the high school hosts a Career Expo where volunteer businesses participate in panel discussions with students from the sophomore class. Each panel is grouped using standardized coding that places various jobs into one of six defined categories. Prior to the Career Expo, the sophomore class participates in testing that identifies which category of jobs each individual student falls into. As the students rotate through each of the panels, they get a chance to experience a wide variety of career options and discover those career opportunities that match their individual testing.

The Career Expo is a half-day event during the morning. Following the panel discussions, a luncheon is held to discuss the event and solicit feedback to improve the experience for both the volunteers and students. The 2007 Career Expo presented to 234 students with nearly 60 panelists, 12 facilitators, and 4 staff from the high school guidance department. The expo and luncheon offer excellent networking opportunities with a wide variety of business owners and professionals. The next Career Expo is tentatively scheduled for sometime in May 2008.

For additional information you may contact Ms. Sandra Smith at the Scarborough High School Guidance Department (sasmith@scarborough.k12.me.us) or Chamber representatives Randy Judkins (randy@randyjudkins.com) or Jim Gove (govej@sbsavings.com).

Small Business Week

Small Business Week in Scarborough April 2 - April 26, 2008

The Scarborough Town Council passed a resolution naming the week of April 29-May 5 Scarborough Small Business Week, thus kicking off our celebration of the diversity of small businesses in our community. The Scarborough Public Library and the Scarborough Community Chamber partnered to provide businesses, especially those without a physical presence in the community with a highly visible location to promote themselves. Several networking opportunities encouraged participants to share their knowledge and learn from each other. Many business to business connections were made!

24 businesses were represented in an eye-catching display in the center of the Library. Participants ranged from established businesses to brand new ones. Some were single person consulting firms working from home, some have high traffic locations with an established customer base. Cats to kids, Candy to flowers, karting to hot tubs, workouts to chiropractic, embroidery to photography- the range of services and products is impressive!

We started the week with a great reception at the Library, catered by Gary McCourt of Hannaford Supermarkets. 50 people enjoyed good company and superb food. Thank you, Gary, and we will be sure to stop by your chef station at Hannaford to say hello and sample your fine cuisine!

We learned a lot at two Lunch and Learn programs at the Library. Jim Milliken, a consultant whose expertise includes marketing and advertising, provided tips on organizing and presenting your business message to the right audience. Frank Kimball, of the Maine Bureau of Insurance, offered tips on insurance coverage every business should consider and answered questions from the participants. Thank you, Jim and Frank, for giving us ideas to manage our businesses more effectively!

And finally, thank you to Nancy Crowell, Library Director and SCC Board member, and her team for putting together this celebration that only gets better each year!

Thank you to all our sponsors and volunteers that made this event possible.
